Why "Unlock Your Voice"... and why a DVD?

 

It's a wild story.

But I was recently invited to sing, record and run a coaching session in the very studio that recorded so many of my favourite singers.

Freddie Mercury's voice had graced those compressors. Alice Cooper. Ozzy Osbourne. The first Skid Row record...

The studio has since been sold and shipped over to New Zealand - but the magic is still all there. The feeling in the room. The sound of the microphones. The hum of the gear. The sheer electricity and excitement in the room.

And it had me thinking about all of my favourite singers - and the singers that had graced this desk, these racks of gear.

None of these iconic singers spoke about singing in a 'technical' way - none of my favourite singers ever spouted vocal technique or terms or vocal anatomy.

Hell, they might not have even known what they were doing.

But whatever "it" is... they were doing it.

And it had me thinking.

If a singer had 15 minutes until they went on stage, or were just given the cue they were recording in this very studio in 15 minutes - and their voice wasn't behaving - what could I do, what could I tell them, what could I show them in that moment - what could I share with YOU that would Unlock Your Voice?

And I started writing out the keys.

Just a few at first.

And it grew.

Not long-winded warmups that take months, not techniques that require a science degree, not monkey sounds or squeaking
